‘The Four Suitors’ puts a dark spin on the traditional royal marriage trope. Princess Laetitia of Avaritia is a rebellious heir whose parents force her to choose among four suitors to secure her crown. Instead of standard political matches, these men are masters of philosophy, astronomy, art, and necromancy. Laetitia must learn their trades, setting up an unconventional clash of personalities.

The story shines brightest when it abandons romance for a kingdom-wide mystery. A sudden disease forces Laetitia into an uneasy alliance with her suitors, particularly the necromancer, Sir Blaxton. This investigative pivot introduces political corruption and dark magic, giving the narrative a grim momentum that elevates it beyond standard court intrigue.

However, the execution falters slightly, largely due to its protagonist. Laetitia’s intensely abrasive demeanor creates a barrier to reader empathy, making her difficult to root for during the first half of the book. Additionally, while the suitors’ distinct crafts provide a clever framework, the world-building feels thin, often bending a bit too conveniently to resolve immediate plot roadblocks.

‘The Four Suitors’ is an inventive but uneven standalone fantasy. Posey weaves dark magic and mystery well, yet the rocky character dynamics hold the story back. It offers an entertaining diversion for fans who enjoy unconventional magic and deeply flawed leads, even if it falls short of being a genre standout.
